In a tie of few clear-cut opportunities, it was always going to take a piece of quality to break the deadlock and that came in the 65th minute through Torres.

The Spanish striker, who has been struggling for form of late, volleyed home a Dirk Kuyt cross from the edge of the area into the bottom corner after an industrious Baggies outfit had denied Liverpool room to play for the most part.

However, Albion did end the game with 10 men as James Morrison was sent off with four minutes of normal time remaining for a reckless challenge on Torres.

The Reds forward was rested for the midweek Europa League play-off trip to Trabzonspor and the decision was justified with victory in Turkey without him and, more importantly, rewarded with the winning goal against the Baggies.

He had not scored in 10 matches for club and country coming into this game as he has been working his way back to fitness but even a 75 per cent fit Torres provides a threat for opposition defenses.

He had three half-chances in the opening 45 minutes but none could have been classed a genuine opportunity.

His first in only the third minute was curled straight into the arms of former Liverpool goalkeeper Scott Carson before a close-range strike was then crowded out at the near post. Read more…

The Reds have only played one of the three teams in their group before. Liverpool beat Steaua 2-1 on aggregate in the second round of the 2003/04 UEFA Cup.

As for fellow Group K sides Napoli and Utrecht, the ties will be a first for the Merseysiders in European competition.

The Reds will start off their Europa League campaign at home to the Romanian side at Anfield on Thursday, September 16. Liverpool’s next test will be away to Utrecht a fortnight later.

The Dutch team will be the Reds final opponents in the last round of games on December 15.

The visitors were also quickly on the back foot during the game as Johnson drove wide on nine minutes before playing a role in the opener four minutes later.

Johnson spotted Milner advancing just beyond Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and found him with a smart pass.

Milner delivered the perfect cut-back into an area he hoped a team-mate had filled. Barry obliged and did the business from 10 yards with a neat side-footed finish.

Tevez and Johnson both found the side-netting from an acute angle later in the half, while Milner’s running was intelligent and incisive.

1. Did you pack a computer in your suitcase?
Torres: Yes, I use it to watch movies, series and keep up to date with my emails. The web site I visit the most is Wikipedia and I always use Skype to talk with my loved ones.

2. Movies or TV series?
Torres: I’ve stolen all the series I have from Xabi Alonso, who has an assortment. I’ve had time to watch so many that I’ve finished with Lost and Prison Break, and I’ve started Californication, Boston Legal, and The O.C. My favorite ones are those two that I finished, but I didn’t like their endings.

3. Your favorite movie and actors.
Torres: I’ve been watching more series as of late but one of the movies that has marked me is Life is Beautiful.

4. What kind of music do you listen to?
Torres: Right now I’m listening to Oasis a lot, which I haven’t done in a while, and also above all else Elvis. Doctor Cota is a huge fan of Elvis and he made me interested in his music. I’ve looked for information on him, I read information about his career and it’s very interesting. It’s impressive.

5. A song that has marked you.
Torres: A lot, but if I have to say one, I’d say “Wonderwall” by Oasis.

6. Do you play videogames?
Torres: Yes, I play football games. I didn’t enter the competition that we have in the camp because it was closed already. The slots were taken rapidly (laughs).

7. What book are you reading in South Africa?
Torres: The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari.

8. What is your best virtue?
Torres: I don’t know what to say about myself, I don’t know myself (laughs). People say my humility but I believe we’re all humble in our own way. I try to stay close to my family and friends. [Interviewer: success hasn’t changed you, that’s a virtue.] For a footballer, it’s important to differentiate between your professional and personal lives, they’re independent things and you shouldn’t let good or bad things affect you because the person should always stay the same no matter how much or how little success you have.

9. And your worst characteristic that you would like to change?
Torres: I have to learn to listen and I’m very absentminded. I forget a lot of things, and I’m horrible at remembering faces and names. When I meet people, I don’t even remember later on that I met them. And then I don’t greet them later on simply because I forgot, not for anything else. [Interviewer: and your shyness?] That’s not a bad characteristic, it’s good in some ways, but in other ways I see it more as a good part of my personality.

10. A vice that you confess to.
Torres: I love all types of candy.

11. Do you have any superstitions?
Torres: No, practically none.

12. What do you hate most in this world?
Torres: Envy and people who think they know everything. I don’t like it when people talk about what something they don’t know. You have to talk about what you know, and nothing else

15. What would you be the best in the world at?
Torres: In forgetting things.

16. The best advice you’ve received.
Torres: That I should know that without my teammates, I’d be no one. Rafa Benítez told me that.

18. Your favorite food.
Torres: Any type of seafood and the quail that my wife’s grandmother makes.

19. A symbol of Spain.
Torres: Our flag. People identify us with sevillanas and bullfighting but for me Spain has much more important things

20. Your idol.
Torres: Kiko.

21. When you were small, what posters did you have in your room?
Torres: Of the doblete of Atleti, of Super Depor, of a lot of players, including Kiko, Pantic and Caminero.

22. An unforgettable memory of your life.
Torres: The birth of my daughter.

23. A sport and an athlete.
Torres: Tennis and Rafa Nadal.

24. What was the first football jersey you received as a gift?
Torres: It was from Atlético de Madrid, with the name Pantic on the back.

25. An unforgettable moment in your career.
Torres: The final of the Eurocopa in Vienna.

26. Your last/biggest splurge as a footballer.
Torres: Helping my siblings with whatever they need.

29. Your first memory of a World Cup.
Torres: I remember getting up with my brother at dawn to watch the 1994 World Cup in the U.S. for Spain’s first game, which they tied 2-2 with Korea. That’s my first memory because in Italy ’90 I was only six, I’m sure I watched it but I don’t remember it.

30. What will you do if you win the World Cup?
Torres: If we win, whatever you ask me to do. [Interviewer: give me something that you promise to do, and don’t give me anything related to your look, since you’re used to changing it once in a while.] You’re right (laughs). Making promises related to hair is easy. That wouldn’t be any problem and the occasion requires something bigger. (Thinks) I know, if we win the World Cup, I’ll do the Camino de Santiago. I’ll do it one day, just don’t ask me to do it as soon as we return to Spain because I want to rest and enjoy my vacation.

Babel, playing as a lone striker for a much-changed Reds side, struck in injury time of an otherwise dismal first half.

Many famous footballers in the world know this manga. I want to give a special thanks to one of our community member’s, Miho, for finding and translating this interview. Thanks Miho!

-You must be mad fan for Oliver and Benji (this should be in Spain. Japanese title is “Captain Tsubasa”)?
It is my most favorite animation… once, now and forever.
I was about 6 years old. For me, football was just becoming important thing and started to air it on TV.
I was watching it until I was about 15 years old.
I can say this animation should be a bible for a boy who dreams about being footballer.

-Why did you like it?
It gave me a big dream. (characters’) passion for football, dynamic skills and goal… but frankly speaking, every goals were impossible. (laugh)
Looking back now, this isn’t a reality world but I was really hoping to join with Oliver and Benji when I was a kid.
I imagined as if I play with them and I was crazy about football.
This gave us (every kids in his generation) a big dream.
Someday I went to Madrid to try out for Atletico Madrid.
For me, this animation was a kind of educational program.
This teaches me what is sportsmanship, concept of values for life, and importance of friendship.
I was influenced by many people, books, movies but Oliver and Benji must watch to help my grown up.
So I recommend to watch this definitely for every kids whom wants to be footballer. (Actually he is recommending by his own HP)

-Who is the most impressive character?
At first, I like Benji the most. (Benji is a goal keeper)
Because I have a reason. Since my brother was GK, I was influenced by him and my football life started as GK. My bother is my hero and overlap the character of Benji, so I didn’t give over to play as GK even if everyone was saying about me such as I was too small or slightly-built boy…
But one day, I had my tooth chipped because I was hit in my face with the ball. (laugh)
So I graduated from GK and transferred to FW.
Then I was going to crazy about genius Oliver who plays football very well than others. I liked Tom also because he was a good player,too. I remember I was so impressive their friendship.

-What was your childhood at that time?
Our family was a standard family where live in Madrid.
We were not poor but we were not living in the lap of luxury.
After I came back from school, I watched Oliver and Benji everyday. Then, I went to the street near my house to play football with my brother since I was in a hypnotic state and was seeking for the ball naturally.Looking back now, I was too exciting and couldn’t help kicking the ball after I just watched it. (laugh)
I was a member of local football team so that I had to practice, and had a match on the weekend.
Or we were watching TV at someone’s home….etc.

-It is very famous story that your brother and sister was driving you to and from the field by rotation?
My parents, too. After I joined in Atletico, it took a time for transportation from my house to the field by bus.
Though we were away of the age, my brother and sister went to the filed together everyday and they didn’t look displeased at all.
While they were doing their homework and they were always waiting for me near the fields until I finish my practice.
My mother always said “You may always quit whenever it makes you hard ”
But I don’t have a sadness or hard memory…
Someone in my family always staying with me.
Thanks to them, I have kept playing football until today.

-Your dream comes true?
Being professional football player is a dream come true for me.
However, a new dream was hidden in the dream.
Therefore, I want to go as far as possible as a football player as long as my body’s condition is OK.
