Liverpool 0-1 Lille: Merseysiders Fall In France

33 views 12 March 2010

Liverpool vs Lille 3-11-10 Three time Europa League winners, Liverpool are in danger of being eliminated from the competition after their 1-0 loss to Lille this past Thursday in France.

I’d like to say Liverpool’s game against Lille was a close, hard fought battle between two great clubs hungry for a win that would give them an edge heading into the second leg of the competition.

I’d like to say it, but frankly that would be a lie ladies and gentlemen. In all, looking back, Lille had a greater possession of the game as Liverpool struggled to find their niche against the French team.

The hosts got of to a bright start, with Lille being the first to find an opening with a cross from Hazard, which unfortunately went uncapitalized by any of his teammates nearby the box.

Liverpool finally came to life midway in the first half when an interchange between Babel and Torres took place, their efforts thwarted when their play was snuffed out.

The second part of the game was more open as both teams looked desperately for a potential game winning shot.

Reina saved his team from said shot after fiercely protecting his teams net by punching out a monstrous drive from Frau.

As the minutes passed, Lille’s confidence grew and their search finally paid off in the 84th minute when a free kick by Hazard found it’s way in the back of Liverpool’s net.

Lille now hold the advantage going into the second leg next Thursday with a 1-0 win over the Reds.

I don’t know what’s going on with Liverpool, not only are they at a disadvantage in the Europa League, but are also struggling to qualify for any European competition next season, on account of their dismal performance in the Premier League.

It’s been a tough season for Liverpool and their fans. I’ve gone from feeling hopeful, to passive, into indifferent, to now annoyed by how much they’ve fallen from their former grace.

Usually this is the time I’d say, “Hey maybe next time? They’ll get better, watch!”. But I’m not sure if next time they’ll be any better, but that’s football right?

It’s unpredictable, and things don’t always go the way you wish they could.

But as a fan of Liverpool and a bigger fan of Fernando Torres, I and several others still hope against hope that Torres and Liverpool can pull through and show exactally why their regarded as one of the top football clubs, not only in the Premier league, but the world.

Like the saying goes, “You’ll Never Walk Alone!”
