Liverpool FC – Debreceni VSC

4 views 21 September 2009

Debreceni2 After a very successful campaign last season for the Merseysiders, Liverpool has come back to the Champions League with fresh attitudes and the drive to go further then last season and take the tournament.

With a 1-0 win against the Hungarian champions, Liverpool has secured three points from their opening match to go to their group E standings. Although the Hungarian Loki’s didn’t go down without a fight, as they made the Reds sweat out their first win.

Our favorite boy, or should I say man, Fernando Torres was present for the full 90 minutes on the pitch as he was a key figure by making his shot pair in with Kuyt’s match winning shot.

From the very beginning Liverpool kept possession of the ball as they implied heavy pressure on their Hungarian opponents. Even with all their drive, Anfield’s Reds were unable and unlucky enough to find or make a decent shot. With time passing on the Debreceni Loki’s confidence grew as Czvitkovics forced Pepe Reina to tip over his crossbar with an effort from the edge of the area.

With the first half of the game coming close to end, Torres was able to beat out two challenges and although his shot was blocked out by Poleksic, his teammate Kuyt wasn’t to far off as he took advantage of the shot and passed the ball into the net. Making Liverpool’s first and only goal of the game.

From the start of the second phase, Torres was hungry for a second goal almost doubling Pool’s lead but was stopped by Johnson, and in the exchange got a slight knock. Don’t worry though, Torres was alright and able to carry on with the game.

Although the winning margin wasn’t much, it’s fair to say a win is a win, no matter how many goals are involved. Liverpool kicked off their 09/10 Champions League with a victory and hopefully they’ll be tons more to come!
